NLP and Nested Loop Structures For Public Speaking

January 28th, 2010
by
Stuart Tan
asked:

So you’re crafting your speech, and you have a few points, but you’re completely unable to remember it or structure it well enough to make it impactful while having a solid message. The reason: you are doing it wrongly. As a person writing a speech, you shouldn’t be paying attention to words and sentences at all. Instead, you ought to be focusing on the emotions you want to generate.

If you know anything about anchoring or conditioned responses, emotions can get connected to each other by presenting them sequentially. So, if you think of your start state (usually also known as a problem state) you already have an introduction. Now, think of your end state, and you build a conclusion, which should also be a solution state.

Between these two states, you structure a series of intermediary states to build other emotions within them. Now, the tricky part. Nested loops are meant to create the same effect in hypnosis as fractionation – interrupting the state by causing the person to go in and out of trance until they go much deeper into trance. Nested loops do this through the use of story structures. Basically, if you don’t complete your story, you cause an open loop. Ideally, before you close the loop, you embed ideas and suggestion within the story that create a meaningful close to the story that goes into the unconscious; people seldom remember things that are completed.

A typical nested loop structure starts this way: open story A – story b – story c – story d – close story d, story c, story b, story a. Just prior to closing each loop, you insert an embedded command that will be useful and can serve the individual.

The biggest issue with the use of nested loops the elegance. Few people can use even this simple structure without being clumsy and awkward in their story telling. You’re not meant to use this as a formula – you really need to know how to effectively utilize nested loops that flow. There are a very wide variety of nested loop patterns and structures that are appropriate for different kinds of people, which is something you can learn at an advanced (master) practitioner training from me.

Is NLP a Valid Business Tool?

January 26th, 2010
by
Rex Truman
asked:

Personal development or self help is a big business these days. There are dozens of books about how you can improve yourself or become a successful businessman, and there are also lots about marketing with new methods. Most of these methods involve a lot of self-assessment, and setting targets. There are the Chicken Soup series of books, and a whole lot more. Among the methods that has been in use for 30 years is NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), which can help improve communication and other skills.

One of the biggest problems with NLP is the strange name. Maybe they would have done better to call it the Grinder-Brandler method in the same way as the Briggs-Myers Personality typing method was named after its originators. The fact is though that NLP business trainingis used by many companies to improve performance, although there is no scientific proof that it works. This is because it has never been submitted to analytical scientific testing. If you are thinking of trying NLP, you need to do your homework before doing any NLP workshops. The way is to attend a one-day workshop and see if you think this will help you.

There are five main methods in NLP, and one of them is called Anchoring. If you lack confidence in a situation, you use anchoring to find a situation where you did feel very confident, and get into that feeling. Then, you do some easily repeatable action to anchor the feeling. It could be to snap your finger and thumb. Then, when you want to feel confident, you snap your finger and thumb. You need quite a bit of practice to make this work. This can help you in many business situations.

Because NLP is about self improvement you need to find a trainer you can work with. Different trainers have different approaches, so make sure you find one who has a suitable style, and will give you the thorough training. Obviously, you want NLP business training to help you succeed in your career, so it is important that the trainer you select is biased towards business training, rather than personal development. You will be more successful if you find a trainer who has a style that suits you. Also, of course, you need to have an open mind.
